過去台灣的鳥類化石紀錄幾乎是一片空白。

現在的台南地區，在幾十萬年前有一種帝雉更大的孔雀。團隊將其命名為「[滅絕孔雀](https://sec.ntu.edu.tw/epaper/article.asp?num=1691&sn=42815&ref=taitokchi.com)」（Pavo miejue）。這隻孔雀肱骨長達13.14公分，遠遠超越現存[帝雉](https://www.rti.org.tw/news?uid=3&pid=214153&ref=taitokchi.com)的8公分。這也是台灣首度發現「已滅絕、大型、特有種」的鳥類化石。

滅絕孔雀生活在距今約80萬至40萬年前，當時與其共存的動物有鋸齒虎與[台灣草原猛獁象](https://www.mirrormedia.mg/external/mirrordaily%5F66579?ref=taitokchi.com)等。不僅刷新孔雀屬（Pavo）的已知範圍推到[亞洲最東處](https://www.instagram.com/p/DYitBNeHR%5FQ/?ref=taitokchi.com)，更成為亞洲第2筆孔雀屬的化石紀錄。研究團隊推測滅絕孔雀可能是以上大型掠食動物的[獵物](https://news.pts.org.tw/article/812592?ref=taitokchi.com)之一。
